Singapore LNG Corporation (SLNG) awarded Samsung C&T Corporation and Foster Wheeler contracts for work on a $1.5 billion LNG terminal at Jurong Island. The project, Singapore's first LNG terminal, is slated to open in 2013.
About $1 billion will go to Samsung for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), SLNG said in a release on 8 February 2010. The project will open with an initial capacity of 3.5 million tons per year with capacity to expand to 6 million tons per year or more if needed. The terminal will be located on a 30-hectare site on the southwestern part of Jurong Island.
SLNG also selected engineering and construction firm Foster Wheeler to provide project management consultancy services. The two companies will jointly manage the EPC contractor through what SLNG termed an 'integrated project management team approach,' allowing SLNG to be 'fully involved in the management of the engineering and construction activities.'
The companies did not disclose the terms of Foster Wheeler's contract.
SLNG said the terminal will be Asia's first open-access, multi-user LNG terminal, providing capacity for Singapore's domestic use as well as opportunities for trading on the open market.
'This LNG terminal is an iconic development for Singapore as it gives us access to global gas markets, thereby strengthening supply and improving key infrastructure, which underpins this vibrant economy,' said SLNG executive director Neil McGregor. 'It is my hope that the new LNG terminal will be a catalyst for Singapore to become a major LNG hub in the future.'
