OilOnline - Quotes, Praise, and Compliments for OilOnline "Quotables"

OilOnline receives quite a bit of feedback from our viewers. This page will list the good, the bad, and sometimes the funny.

Dear Moderator,
I'm writing to acknowledge the receipt of the July 2005 edition of your highly acclaimed magazine, Offshore Engineer. It really was interesting as well as very informing. Please accept my heartfelt thanks. Keep up the good work.
Regards,
Mayaki Onaivi, Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Dear Terry
I am writing to thank you for the article that you wrote on our Sakhalin Phase II Development "Earthquakes, Pendulums and the Ice Kitchen".

I thought that both the writing and the presentation format were excellent, in particular the way that you clearly and accurately expressed two very complex issues to the general reader.

At times the general 'press' has highlighted some of the perhaps difficult areas of the development, such as the perceived environmental (green) issues. I therefore appreciated an accurate and well expressed article on the successes of the design. Many people around the project have verbally expressed their interest in the article and often noted the quality of the writing.

I also understand that the article went down well with our partners in the development.

Viking Life Saving Inc. of Norway and Denmark and Quest Consulting of Melbourne Australia have written in showing interest in the article.

Congratulations to you and the Offshore Engineer

Oliver Cottingham, HSE Engineer
Sakhalin Energy Investment Company Ltd.

Terry,
I would like to say that I got a lot of positive feedback regarding the article on Sakhalin. Readers found it very informative, well written and good pictures. In particular I got positive feedback from ABS Consulting who are earthquake experts, from Peter Marshall who is a recognised authority in the field of safety and reliability of offshore platforms and several others. Also I got feedback from people who did design work related to Sakhalin II platforms, generally feeling a sense of achievement that they are part of such ground-breaking development project. Many thanks for all your effort and dedication in putting together this article. regards

Mike Efthymiou
Sakhalin Energy (SEIC), Topsides Design, (AMEC)

How many gallons of oil are in a barrel of crude oil?

- Ron, OilOnline viewer

Reply from OilOnline.com:
Dear Ron,
Thank you for your email. 40 gallons of oil are in a barrel of crude oil.

Sincerely,
OilOnline.com Staff

I've been in industry for a few years, but can't find out definition of "tender rig" or 'semi-tender". Asked around already but no one seems to know. Any thoughts on sources or do you know the answer?

- Mike Christie, Well Services Consultant

Reply from OilOnline.com:
Mr. Christie: Thank you for inquiry to OilOnline.com. A tender rig is typically a support vessel that serves in support of a drilling rig. It basically acts as a platform for supplies that is stationed alongside a drilling rig from which the rig will work off of to reduce the loads on the actual rig. Tender rigs can be either jackup style (like a lift boat), semisubmersible or submersible.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,
Marshall DeLuca, Gulf of Mexico Editor, Offshore Engineer

It has been some time since we visited this website. You have done an outstanding job with it.Thank You for providing this service to the oil and gas community.

Just have the question of how many gallons of Diesel Fuel are produced from 1 Barrel of Oil

- Chip Sommer, Mountaineer Transportation

Reply from OilOnline.com:
Dear Mr. Sommer,
This would depend entirely on the quality of the original crude, the refinery capacity and method and what else is being made from that barrel - in short, no way of knowing without more data.

Dear Mr DeLucca,

I'm a subscriber to OE Magazine and read with great interest the article about LNG Terminal projects in the US in last month's edition. Being a Shift Supervisor at the Galp Atlantico LNG Terminal in Sines, Portugal (which will be handed over and officially inaugurated sometime next month), it is very pleasant to find more LNG related articles in OE.

I would very much like to contact Mr. Steve Meheen in reference to BHP Billiton's Cabrillo Port project. Any chance you may disclose his email address, any other form of contact or forward my contact to him?

Many thanks and keep up the excellent work!

- Antonio M. Olim, Shift Supervisor, Galp Atlantico, Sines LNG Terminal

I am really appreciated for sending this issue of your worthy magazine (offshore engineer). this issue, december 2003. I am intensivly looking forward seeing more issues of your magazine.
- Mehrdad Khalaj

Rick von Flatern; As a longtime reader of your column, (I share Rob Burnett's choice of reading every issue from back to front), I always read YOU 1st! Would you consider doing an op-ed piece for the local "FISH WRAPPER" here in Pensacola, Fl. The local is called the Pensacola News Journal. The local mis- informed residents only hear a lop-sided viewpoint from the "NO DRILL FOLKS"! The Presidents brother Jeb is of no help and is in bed with the No DRILLERS.... Here we have all this RESERVE off our coast known as the "DESTIN DOME" and it just sits there, un-tapped! Enuogh GAS to supply Florida's needs for 25-30 years! C'mon Rick give us "DRILLERS" a hand, what do you say?? YOU would be my choice for Energy Sec.
- J.W. Benoit, Florida

Dear OilOnline: I am not sure you can help me with this, but I hope you can at least give me a lead. I'm a researcher working on a new IMAX film that will be the in-house permanent film, "The Story of Texas" at the Bob Bullock Museum in Austin.
- Diana Claitor, Austin, Texas

Response from OilOnline: I would like to direct you to the Offshore Energy Center Ocean Star Rig Museum. They have accomplished so much in the past few years including a learning center and lots of history regarding offshore drilling. - James W. Self, Managing Editor

Repsonse back from Ms. Claitor:
Dear Mr. Self: Your quick response is greatly appreciated. I followed your suggestion and have already emailed the Ocean Rig people and a representative immediately called me back. Oil industry people are extremely fast and efficient, I must say! I am now more optimistic about finding what we need for this part of the film.

Expect a slump in oil demands. My van has just gone duff cos some of your oil failed to stay in the block. Me and my mates reckon you lot are to blame so we are not buying anymore. Start dumping OPEC we got clout. Bye!
- Brian Peace, Little Hampton, Sussex, UK

I think you should put some info on stuff like "what is oil" and other stuff for people who just want to find out things about the industry
- Dylan Master, Perth Australia

Dear Dylan,
Please note that OilOnline publishes an "Oilfield Glossary" containing definitions and commonly used phrases and terms for the oil & gas industry. This glossary can be found on the web site at the following address: http://www.oilonline.com/info/glossary.asp

I am looking for information regarding the timing of introduction of 2D seismic and 3D seismic respectively. I need to know which player in the oil company were the first to use either of the two technologies. In short if you can tell me where the change over from 2D to 3D became evident, I would be grateful.
- Thanks, Miss JO Vooa, Doctorate student

Dear Jo,
Re your inquiry, 3D seismic surveying began in the late 1970s, and during the 1980s was carried out for oil companies on an exclusive basis. In 1983 Landmark Graphics produced the first workstations for interpretation of 3D data. If you had to pick a company which led the 3D revolution, it would be Shell which by the early 1990s was committed to 3D surveys only. The 1990s saw the advent of 3D non-exclusive marine surveys and the success of such companies as PGS in making the technology cost effective with its Ramform design vessels. So, in summary the transition from mainly 2D to mainly 3D took place during the 1980s and accelerated in the early 1990s also reflecting huge advances in computer power.
- Andrew McBarnet, Seismics Editor, Offshore Engineer

There are a lot of folks who can't understand how we came to have an oil shortage here in the USA. Well, there's a very simple answer. Nobody bothered to check the oil! We just did'nt know we were getting low. The reason for this is purely geographical. All the oil is in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Wyoming, Alaska, Etc. All the dipsticks are in Washington, D.C.
- Adam Thomasson, OilOnline Viewer

The news on June 9 states that Anticosti Island is offshore of Nova Scotia. Anticosti Island is part of the Province of Quebec and is in the mouth of the St Lawrence river, North of the Gaspe Peninsula, making it necessary to cross 2 provincial borders to reach the shores of the island.

I want to congratulate Mr. Rick von Flatern for his excellent editorial note on the Offshore Engineer, February 1999 issue. It is one of the most brilliant, well written and realistic view over the oil industry I had read on several years. Of course, being a land-based geologist, Offshore Engineer was fully out of my scope. If your editorial notes are like this one, I will subscribe immediately!!
