Statoil drilled a dry well in its first exploratory effort off the Faeroe Islands in the North Atlantic. Well 6005/15-1, the Longan well, was the first of two wells that Statoil and License 003 partners agreed to drill. Transocean Sedco Forex's semi Transocean Explorer drilled the well. The license lies about 80 miles southeast of the Faeroes. The company said it would now study data from Longan as it prepares to drill the next Faeroes well. Other licensees in the concession include Phillips Petroleum, Enterprise Oil and Veba Oil & Gas.
