The Faeroes Ministry of Petroleum approved Amerada Hess (Faeroes) Ltd.'s
plans to drill the company's first exploratory well on the Faeroe Shelf. The
oil company has chartered the semisubmersible Sovereign Explorer to drill the
well. The rig is currently plugging a noncommercial well that the Statoil
group spud earlier. The semi was expected to be handed over the Amerada Hess
within a few days. Amerada Hess is operator of the Faeroes Partnership,
which includes British Gas, Danish Oil & Gas and Atlantic Petroleum. The
partnership holds License No. 001, which covers acreage southeast of the
Faeroe Islands on the boundary with the United Kingdom. The well will be
drilled in about 3,116 feet of water. The well is expected to take two to
three months and will be the last well drilled on the Faeroe Shelf this year.
The drillship West Navion is still drilling for BP on Faeroes License 004.
