The Railroad Commission of Texas said it will end its fiscal year 2003 by
plugging four wells in the George Bush Park in West Houston. These wells are
examples of wells that were abandoned by the operator and posed a threat to
ground water, which occurs at a depth of 1,850 feet in this area, the commission
said. The estimated cost to plug these wells is $60,825. The commission said
it Oil Field Cleanup Fund has provided resources to plug 20,528 abandoned wells
in the state since 1984. Revenue into the fund comes primarily from fees
paid by the oil and gas industry as well as enforcement penalties,
reimbursements, salvaged equipment from well plugging and site remediation operations and
interest on fund balances.
