Combined drilling technology from Hughes Christensen and INTEQ recently reduced costs by delivering performance excellence in the UK sector of the North Sea. The objectives of the 3D multilateral well were to eliminate a BHA trip, enhance directional control from the whipstock and improve penetration rates through limestone stringers. BHI engineers recommended HCC’s 8-1/2" Genesis® XT HCM506Z with EZSteer depth-of-cut control technology in conjunction with INTEQ’s AutoTrak® X-treme®, LithoTrak™ and TesTrak™ systems. The all Baker Hughes BHA was run with exceptional results, drilling 1,337 m (4386 ft) in One Fast Run while successfully delivering all directional objectives and complex well trajectories. Penetration rates averaged 26.7 m/hr with instantaneous ROP reaching 40 m/hr. By utilizing BHI’s performance-oriented drilling technology, the operator saved 42 hours of rig time, saving $819,000.
