The Brazilian offshore naval industry is experiencing a period of anticipation. Shipyards, ship owners and equipment suppliers await the announcement, by Petrobras, of the biggest support vessel construction and chartering program for oil and gas rigs ever launched in the country. The state company plans to bid for 146 vessels to be manufactured in Brazil, with an increase in the national content, by 2014. According to market estimates, the order shall total investments around R$ 10 billion.
The launching of the program has two objectives: renew the fleet and meet the increase in the production of oil and natural gas, while taking into consideration, the production development in the fields of Tupi and Jupiter, at an area known as the pre-salt layer in Santos Basin. A navigation company executive stated that the demand for offshore vessels surpasses oil production. The new pre-salt fields are located at great distances from shore, which will require more complex and sophisticated vessels.
