Our commitment to finding new energy sources is linked to our investment in the people who will make it possible.
Alternative Energy is a dynamic business working at the frontiers of new technology, business development and new energy industries. BP has a long history of keeping people moving on the road and addressing the issue of growing CO2 emissions from transport fuels, offering increasingly cleaner fuels to customers and identifying new growth opportunities in the clean energy sector.
In 2005, BP pledged to invest $8 billion on alternative energy by 2015. We have invested at a faster pace than that and at the end of 2013 are two years ahead of schedule. We will continue to invest in safe, sustainable and secure energy for the future.
We focus on operating large-scale profitable businesses and commercializing our innovative technologies. That’s why we’re always on the look-out for people who are passionate about their field of expertise and applying their proven skill within alternative energy – people who are motivated by challenging and interesting work; stimulated by change; determined to do an excellent and safe job; and energized by learning and sharing know-how to do things better.
Around 5,000 people currently work in Alternative Energy at BP. They come from diverse backgrounds, bringing skills and experience in agriculture, bioscience, brewing, chemicals, engineering, further education, licensing, project management, safe operations, exploration and production, and refining and marketing – yet they all work collaboratively to create commercial value for our business.
To join them, you’ll need to demonstrate an affinity with BP’s values and behaviours (safety, respect, excellence, courage and one team). You also need the ability to thrive in the uncertainty and ambiguity that can come with working in new frontiers. Throughout the world rapidly advancing technology and changing government regulations and policy continually impact our business.
By combining the world’s oldest and most fundamental value chains, agriculture and energy, we are creating affordable, scalable and sustainable biofuels that are a force for good in the world.
Our strategy is: investment in the production of ethanol from sugarcane in Brazil; the development of cellulosic technology to produce ethanol from agricultural waste and dedicated energy grasses; and the development of the advanced ‘drop-in’ fuel molecules, biobutanol.
In Brazil we own and operate three sugar cane ethanol mills located in Goiás and Minas Gerais states, and a head office in São Paulo.
In Hull, UK, we have partnered with DuPont and AB Sugar, an Associated British Foods subsidiary, to create a joint venture, Vivergo Fuels. The plant will produce 420 million litres of bioethanol a year, as well as the protein required in animal feed for over 340,000 dairy cows every single day.
In the US, we have our world-class global technology center in San Diego where leading scientists and technologists are generating innovations in the biofuels industry. We have demonstrated this technology at our cellulosic biofuels facility in Louisiana and are now focusing on commercializing and licensing this technology.
Two other new fuels that we are developing rely on advanced fermentation technology.
- Our joint venture with DuPont, Butamax, is based in Wilmington, Delaware. We are working to commercialize biobutanol, an energy-rich molecule offering better compatibility with existing engines and infrastructure.
- With DSM, we are developing a ‘sugar to diesel’ process for producing renewable diesel from sustainable carbohydrate sources, such as sugar cane.
Wind farms provide safe, clean and increasingly affordable energy. In areas where winds blow strongly they can provide large volumes of electricity, sometimes at a lower cost than conventional power generation.
With almost 1,500 turbines now spinning across nine US states, our cash-generating business, BP Wind Energy, is one of the top-five producers of renewable power in the US. We are a principal owner and operator of wind power facilities, with interests in 16 wind farms in nine states – from Pennsylvania to Hawaii.
BP has a gross generating capacity of 2,600 MW – enough electricity to power over 775,000 average American homes.

Integrated supply and trading (IST)Build your career with one of the largest physical traders of oil and gas
Integrated supply and trading (IST) works in close partnership with upstream and downstream, providing the commercial face for BP. It enhances BP’s group value through the application of distinctive supply, trading, risk management and information technology skills, underpinned by a world-class control infrastructure.
We trade a varied range of products including oil, natural gas, liquefied natural gas, currencies, metals and financial derivatives. To put that into perspective, in a year IST completes some 550,000 transactions and serves over 12,000 customers across more than 140 countries. Every second our servers are crunching over 157 trillion independent calculations, equivalent to around 100,000 home PCs.
IST helps to create long-term value from our assets by managing the flow of these commodities. It also brings our specialized knowledge of safe and reliable energy production and asset management, together with our experience of global markets, to create a single commercial face to the traded markets.
Our global trading activity generates a huge amount of information that other companies without access to physical assets simply do not have. This gives us a clear advantage in converting up-to-the-minute data into effective market calls.
IST touches 85% of our business units – over 80% of the group’s turnover flows through our supply and trading business (2012) – and combines all our oil, gas, power and chemical trading activities. And because we work with other energy companies, financial institutions and a host of other organizations, our people have wide exposure and long-term career development opportunities.
IST has around 3,250 employees working in a culture of mutual trust and collaboration. These include 300 traders and 200 originators, the majority of whom are based in our five main trading hubs. In all our purpose-built trading and financial offices, you can see the passion, ambition and enthusiasm we have for working at the cutting edge of trading.
IST is made up of the following:
Supply and trading recruits world-class traders, commercial specialists and experts in specific energy sectors, as well as risk managers, financial controllers and technologists.
Trading analytics comprises a number of high-calibre teams including quantitative analytics, market analysis, long-term analytics, structuring analytics and treasury analytics located across our five main trading hubs worldwide.
Trading operations carries a broad remit and this is reflected in the wide range of people we recruit – top-class engineers, marketing professionals, IT specialists and those with natural gas scheduling experience, to name but a few.

Plus, the best theatre scene in the world, an iconic skyline, premier shopping and green, open spaces.
Chicago is the third most populous city in the United States and a city buzzing with energy. In the so-called ‘Windy City’, towering skyscrapers overlook sandy beaches and you’ll find world-class dining, shopping and entertainment, including theatres, museums and galleries.
Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States, the largest in the state of Texas. It’s filled with world-class dining, arts, hotels, shopping and nightlife – the historic Heights, the Museum District and the Space Center are a must to be enjoyed.
Calgary is a city in the province of Alberta, Canada, situated on the Bow River. It is famous for its arts and culture, an eclectic mix of restaurants and bars and, of course, its winter sports.
Our Singapore office is located in the Harbour Front area, in the south west of the island. It is currently being developed into a business and lifestyle hub, with many large corporations choosing to make their home there alongside BP. It is close to the Harbour Front centre and VivoCity, Singapore’s largest shopping mall.
