The Senior Design Engineer works closely with Business Development, Newpark Management and customers to design and develop innovative products that clearly differentiate Newpark in various new and existing markets. Maintaining a pipeline of new product opportunities is a key strategic requirement of this position.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
This role is the key technical lead on the structural design of innovative new plastic products.
•Responsible for identifying the structural concepts, materials & processes to be used in the manufacture of these new designs. This could include the development of unique and proprietary plastics or composite processes.
•Responsible for Intellectual Property, trademark, copyright, and all other formal means to protect Newpark design and engineering trade secrets developed in the execution of this position.
•In the course of the structural design activity, the Senior Plastics Engineer will develop and determine the design protocols for this new product. This includes both finite element analysis and physical testing to properly characterize and validate the capabilities of the product in advance of commercialization of the product.
•Provides technical expertise in structural design to drive new products through the new product development process. Interfaces and collaborates with internal & external customers to development innovative solutions for new business opportunities.
•Drive the design and analysis of new product concepts. Oversee the realization of these concepts as prototypes. Drive concept improvement through testing and performance troubleshooting.
•Evaluate product and/or process ideas that are developed outside of Newpark then make recommendations for how or if to acquire these technologies for exclusive Newpark use. This would include making recommendations for acquisitions of firms that meet Newpark strategic goals.
•Meeting customer expectations through effective communication, service and robust quality while meeting established timelines and budgets.
•Documents and communicates engineering specifications using standard formats and archiving methods.
•Evaluate competitive and/or existing products in the market.
•Provides management weekly feedback or communication on all major projects in progress, including but not limited to schedules and cost for these projects.
•Works very closely with other members of the team on all new potential plastic parts or products. Provide plastics expertise to part designs and manufacturing plans for the part, and any other recommendations as needed or required to ensure part integrity to meet required engineering requirements.
•As product moves to commercialization, support the operations team in implementing the necessary part molds, process equipment and machinery. Ensure that the product structural design capability is maintained as the product is commercialized.
•Provide plastics design expertise to the operations teams to facilitate acquisition of molds, process equipment and machinery at the lowest cost possible and ensure engineering goals will be met. Contribute effectively so that all projects meet timelines and budgets.
•Develop proposals for new product capabilities including: new molds, new process equipment, and new machinery as required.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in Plastics or Mechanical Engineering or appropriate technical discipline preferred.
Experience: Requires 8 - 10 years minimum professional experience in mechanical or plastics engineering discipline.
•A command of fundamental engineering, plastics and structural analysis is essential, as is knowledge of relevant industry test standards.
•Lean Six Sigma applied knowledge and experience is preferred.
•Advanced proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Outlook;
•Experience with CAD/CAM software and other advanced engineering software;
•Excellent Project Management skills;
•Must have excellent technical skills in engineering structures and strength of materials;
•Experience with measurement systems, measurement equipment, and plastics lab devices, and certified & reputable 3rd party laboratories.
•Plastics product design, structural design, plastics materials, plastic part assembly and multiple plastics molding processes.
•Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and 3D product design software.
•Knowledge of complex tooling, process control equipment, and other devices relevant to plastics manufacturing.
